HE HEARD the commercial for the play on a Eugene radio station, but tried to ignore it.
For nearly five years, roughly since he had moved to Eugene, he had been trying to ignore "Les Miserables." That's what you must do when, if not running from the past, you're at least trying to put off the pain of making peace with it.
After all, that's what the play's lead character, the thief Jean Valjean, did, didn't he? Tried to run from his past?
Ah, but then, out of nowhere, comes a touch of grace and, depending on what you do with that grace, you're blessed. And equally blessed are those who have offered it.
Kurk Davidson remembered the times he had turned down friends who wanted to drag him to the play, set in 19th-century France. "I can't," he'd say. "It's like surgery. The wounds are too fresh."
But something - serendipity, he would later surmise - drew him in this time. And so last Friday night he spent $5 on a play at North Eugene High for which people...
