AFTER MANAGING to keep the doors of their store open for nearly three years, Shakelah and Arnold Morgan face a pivotal decision.

The owners of Blessings Beauty Supply on West 11th Avenue in Eugene sell hair care products, mainly for blacks. In the back, Shakelah Morgan and two employees braid and weave hair.

The business pays the bills and provides a modest living for the couple and their children. Yet the Morgans ask the same question as many owners of new businesses struggling to survive: Should they take out a loan to help them grow?

Shakelah Morgan, 28, is interested in exploring the possibility. Arnold Morgan, 42, needs to be persuaded.

"Arnold is a true believer in not owing anybody any money," Shakelah Morgan said. "But there is so much we can offer if we had some working capital."

The topic is familiar to small-business experts.
