The game plan for the Oregon track and field program's next era has been set in motion.

Martin Smith, four years into his tenure as the UO men's track coach, will begin his fifth season in 2003-04 as the lead Duck of the men's and women's merged track and field and cross country programs.

Earlier this week, Oregon became the eighth of the nine Pac-10 Conference track and field men's and women's programs to reorganize under a joint supervisor.

But where do the Ducks go now? How will the programs, long separate with two head coaches but operating under the same UO banner, function in the years to come? What approach will be taken to the repositioning of the women's program as a conference- and national-level contender?

"We want to stay committed to some of the principles that we have utilized for the men's program," Smith said.
