Ever since Sept. 11, TV viewers have seemed to prefer known quantities to daring, unconventional new series : "According to Jim" over "Undeclared"; "Yes, Dear" over "Andy Richter Controls the Universe"; "Hack" over "Robbery Homicide Division"; "Eight Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter" and "My Wife and Kids" over "Life With Bonnie" and "Bernie Mac."

If it's a trend, now comes the true test. Would viewers prefer a well-made retread of a cop show, or a genuinely challenging Hispanic drug-dealer series?

"Dragnet" and "Kingpin" both debut at 9 p.m. Sunday: the former on ABC's WLS Channel 7, the latter on NBC's WMAQ Channel 5. My fear is that "Dragnet" will stomp "Kingpin" right out of the box.
