Chicago theater is an entirely human enterprise. That means that much of the time it coasts on reputation, delivering only enough to keep the rumor going that we do great theater here.

But every once in a while a theater company does something so ambitious, crazy and inspired it reminds us of what Chicago theater is all about.

The current Famous Door project, a two-part, six-hour adaptation of John Irving's sprawling novel "The Cider House Rules" is such a show. With two directors and a cast of 30, playing easily 60 or more characters, this show has ambition in spades.
