Joe Foss, a Marine Corps Medal of Honor winner during World War II, died New Year's Day, but I just saw a photo of him in the past week that really connected. It didn't indicate when the photo was taken, but I know it was from the mid to late 1950s when he was governor of South Dakota.

Foss was credited with shooting down 26 Japanese planes over Guadalcanal during the last three months of 1942, when there was still plenty of doubt whether the Allies would win that war. He returned to America and helped sell a lot of war bonds before returning to civilian life and starting...
