The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music is a ten-volume work covering the musics of the world. The multidisciplinary project was initiated in 1988 and profits from much of the ethnomusicological research undertaken over the last fifty years or so. Volume 7, devoted to East Asia, has 1,152 pages, an accompanying compact disc (thirty-four tracks with explanatory notes), glossary, and guides to publications, recordings, and films. The volume is divided into six parts: "An Introduction to East Asian Musics and Cultures"; "Issues and Processes in East Asian Musics"; "China"; "Japan"; "Korea"; and "Inner Asia." The most extensive treatment is given to music of China (pp. 85-529), Japan (pp. 531-798), and Korea (pp. 801-999), with summaries of the musics of Mongolia, Tuva (Tyva), and Siberia given in the last part of the book. With over one hundred contributors, the editorial team has compiled a vast amount of information in a systematic way that attempts to follow the structure of the other volumes in the series.
The first part of the book provides an overview of the diversity of the subject area. Of particular interest is the section on cultural interactions, where the truly multidisciplinary character of the volume is at its best.
