Article Excerpt Four months ago I commented on how boring PCs had become. But what's boring for the industry (and jaded journalists) may not be so boring for individual users. For many home users and library uses, if your current PC is at least 3 years old you might be quite excited by a new PC (including the snazzy new Macs). This column is based on my own personal experience, but I believe there are broader lessons.
Shortly after submitting the previous "PC Monitor," I finally purchased a new PC, despite lack of a truly compelling need. I moved from a 400 MHz Celeron to a 2.26GHz Pentium-4; from a 10 GB disk (4800 or 5400 RPM) to an 80 GB 7200 RPM disk; from an unknown graphics chip with 8 MB display RAM to an nVidia GeForce4 MX with 128 MB display RAM; and from a 2x DVD-ROM drive to a 16x DVD-ROM drive and a 24x/10x/40x CD-RW burner.
