My sons are at that age when a boy's mind turns to warfare. Our backyard is strewn with the aftermath of mock battles they routinely conduct with other kids in the neighbourhood. The tree-house I built them is now a camouflaged sniper's nest. They regularly hunker down in our cellar, pretending to shelter from bombs dropped by an imaginary enemy in the skies above our suburb. In their sandpit the boys command a desert battleground, complete with grim plastic solidiers who aim tiny guns, clutch their chests, or lie face down in the sand.
After persistent requests I took my sons to a military disposals store, where they gleefully rummaged through redundant WWII gas-masks, shell-casings from the Korean War, ex-Vietnam ammo boxes and camouflage nets from the Falklands campaign (`Real war stuff, Dad!'). I felt uneasy...
