Article Excerpt Every election in the past year has confirmed the Greens as a force in Australian politics, and the principal `minor' or non-governmental party in the political constellation.
They have won a Federal lower-house seat, a swag of State seats, and are the de facto opposition in Tasmania. In Victoria, they polled over 20 per cent in a series of inner Melbourne seats, 15-18 per cent in some eastern suburbs, and between 6 and 14 per cent in solid working-class ALP seats in Melbourne.
They have assumed this role out of an `unsettled' period in the party-political system, driven by the de facto governmental bloc built on the `convergence' of the Liberal and Labor Parties, and driven by the social dislocations of their common agenda (neoliberalism, national security). The disturbance has variously produced One Nation and populism on the Right, growing numbers of independent MPs, and the vacuum of the Democrats' implosion.
