Inside the Maravilla Senior Residence, the brutal touch of winter does not intrude - the howling wind swallowed by the soothing sound of cascading water and a dreary landscape deflected by lush tropical greenery.

"The doctors wanted this to look like you're walking through the Amazon," says Kenny Gallt, a landscape architect, who designed in Vernon Hills what he believes to be the largest rain forest-themed living area of its kind in the world.

Gallt, founder of Foliage Design Systems of Chicago, has been involved in the development of interior "plant-scape" for several high-profile projects in the Chicago area, including the developing Hyatt Center downtown. He also has won many awards for his work.

But his baby is Maravilla, a self-contained, climate-controlled world bigger than a football field...
