Hospital quality reporting plan would put information online: health care consumers could benefit from valid data. (Focus Health Care).

Increasingly consumers of health care are shopping around before deciding where to get services. Often that search is aided by Internet research. And now organizations such as the Mississippi Hospital Association (MHA) are backing a proposal by the Bush administration to provide a new Internet-based hospital quality reporting plan.

"I think it is an excellent idea as long as the data is valid," said Dr. Ken Davis, chief medical officer, North Mississippi Medical Center, Tupelo. "Consumers should expect safety and quality in the hospitals. Because of recent press reports, they don't automatically assume it. We do know there is a big difference in hospitals. Hospitals that do large volumes of procedures typically have better outcomes. I think hospitals should be proactive in measuring, improving and reporting quality data."
