Oregon's volleyball program has been riddled with struggle amid a dozen-year fight to escape losing seasons.

In recent weeks, the losing has extended to the loss of athletes. Five players - three on scholarship and two walk-ons - left the team.

Did the departures catch UO coach Carl Ferreira by surprise? "Yes ... and no," he said.

Two scholarship juniors, Heather Gilmore and Lindsay Murphy, are transferring - Gilmore to Idaho State, where her sister is on the Bengal volleyball team, and Murphy to Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash., not far from her Spokane home.

A third player on scholarship, sophomore Alisa Nelson, was released from the UO program but retains her scholarship as long as she continues to be enrolled at Oregon, which Nelson has indicated she will...
