THERE'S A NEW COACH, some new players and plenty of position changes.

With the season opener a day away, there's not much that can dampen the renewed spirits of the Oregon softball team.

Not even a preseason poll released last week that placed the Ducks in the cellar. In fact, that recent poll of Pac-10 coaches, which picked Oregon eighth out of eight teams, has only added more fuel to the Ducks' fire.

"It makes you work even harder because you know you shouldn't be picked at the bottom," senior Andrea Vidlund said.

"Being the underdog is kind of a bonus because you have nothing to lose," senior Alyssa Laux said.

"Who knows what can happen?" sophomore Mari Lyn Petrick said. "People's expectations for us are low so it's going to be fun to come out and bite them in the butt."
