A proposal to create a "living wage" standard for city employees and contractors was snubbed by the newly configured Eugene City Council on Wednesday, five months after the previous council unanimously endorsed the plan in concept.

Jennifer Solomon, one of two new councilors sworn in this month, said backers had proposed setting wages at "a wildly high rate." And fellow council newcomer George Poling characterized the entire idea of living wage standards as "wishful thinking fraught with fundamental flaws."

"I don't think this is the most effective way to use city dollars," Poling said.
