The Jamaican government recently awarded the contract for the refurbishment and operation of Sangster International airport in Montego Bay to an international consortium operating under the name of MBJ AIRPORTS LTD. The group, headed by Spain-based DRAGADOS Y CONCESIONES Y FOMENTO DE CONTRATOS (35%), a subsidiary of GRUPO DRAGOS, also includes AGENCIA UNIVERSALES S.A. (AGUNSA) of Chile (35%), ASHTROM GROUP LTD. (15%) & VANCOUVER AIRPORT of Canada (15%). The airfield in question is the largest airport on the island that has become one of the main tourism destinations in the Caribbean.
According to the terms of the award, the partnership will be responsible for the completion of refurbishment and extension works. The undertaking will mainly involve remodeling the terminal building and enlarging it from 25,000 square meters to 60,000 square meters. In addition, the joint venture will also operate the airport and its commercial services. The concession is expected to last for 30 years and include the operation of different commercial services including leasing commercial premises, dining facilities and duty free shops among others.
The cost to complete the project has been pegged at $165,000,000.
DRAGADOS employs a total workforce of approximately 43,000 and operates through 200 subsidiaries. The group is involved in construction, the provision of services to companies and communities, industrial engineering, infrastructure concession and management as well as the environment among other activities.
