Within the framework of the European Union there are various types of products that require CE marking through much of the EC and a system of 'harmonised' Standards to test them. The exceptions are for sales within the UK, Ireland, Finland and Sweden but it applies whenever these countries export to another EC country. There are about 50 product types and they are those where a health and safety aspect is present. Such sectors include medical devices, personal protective equipment, toys, electrical goods, pressure vessels etc. Another major category where safety is a factor, is construction.

The European Standards for masonry units and related products are harmonised specifications and as such are required by the EU Commission in order that buildings satisfy the essential requirements of the Construction Products Directive (CPD). The CPD aims to remove barriers to trade through the standardisation of, methods of test, declaration of product performance and the procedures for conformity assessment. As a consequence, users will be able to directly compare the characteristics of different products and assess their suitability for use in respect of the following CPD requirements;

* Mechanical resistance and stability.

* Safety, in case of fire.

* Hygiene, health and the environment.

* Safety in use.

* Protection against noise.

* Energy economy and heat retention.
