Article Excerpt
One of the biggest trends in the resins market--as in the adhesives market generally--is the increased cost of compliance with environmental and other legislation. Obviously, environmental concerns--particularly where reduction in solvent used is required--feature large, but so do safety requirements, particularly in adhesives used in the construction industry where fire safety is a major issue.

Recycling has been a major issue for the industry, leading a number of companies to research acrylic and polypropylene resins that can be manufactured from plant matter. These can be lighter and more elastic than other resins, as well as cheaper. Baxenden Chemical, for instance, has patented a technology for saturated polyester resins from oilseed rape, using enzymes.

It has significant cost savings over other technologies since it can produce resin at 80[degrees]c, where other processes require temperatures of 260[degrees]c. but the enzyme-derived resin still ends up more expensive than competitive products, so that it is recommended for use only in particular niche areas.

Bacterially derived resins form another area of research. Synthetic, biodegradable resins based on aliphatic polyesters and aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters are seeing growth of over 30% a...
