As county hoteliers plan their annual budgets for 2005, their chief concern is how to make up for the deficiency in destination marketing resulting from decreased funding to the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the belief it won't be restored in the near future.

"That's what everyone is worried about," said lodging industry analyst Bob Ranch. "But the reality is that individual hotel properties can't market a destination. They may pool funds if they're a Sheraton or a Marriott. But their advertising is designed to focus on a brand more than a destination, which also includes tourist attractions."
