The assault weapons ban has fallen victim to election-year politics.

The ban on a range of automatic and semi-automatic weapons, which had strong bipartisan support, was signed into law on September 13, 1994, as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. The law included a provision that allowed the ban to lapse after 10 years unless Congress voted an extension.

And so it lapsed on September 13, 2004 without any real debate. The Senate passed an amendment to extend the ban by a 98-2 vote as part of the Gun Manufacturers Liability...
