Outgunned: Up Against the NRA

Books about lawsuits, especially those about personal injury litigation, have become a genre unto themselves. I call them tort sagas. Tort sagas capitalize on the inherent drama created when people square off over who should pay for costs associated with death and physical harm. They also capitalize on the ever-increasing attention the American public--and American politicians--pay to the civil justice system. The best tort sagas are lively, informative, accessible, and topical. Outgunned succeeds on all counts.

This spring, the New York Times reported two stories with the central themes of this book. On April 13, the paper reported that a gunman entered a high school in New Orleans and shot four students with an AK-47 assault rifle, wounding three and killing one. On April 10, the Times reported some significant statistics about who sells guns to whom and how guns end up in New York City, which has some of the toughest gun control laws in the country.
