Article Excerpt A few decades ago, when the legal profession was predominately male, a married couple who were both lawyers was a rare commodity. Now that law school populations are nearly evenly divided between the sexes, the idea of husband-and-wife lawyers is hardly news, but ifs still somewhat unusual for them to work in the same firm. Some couples can't do so because they practice different types of law. Others are building careers in different firms when they meet and are reluctant to change course. Some couples are simply wary of mixing business with marriage.
Not Fred Baron and Lisa Blue. As partners in one of the nation's leading plaintiff law firms, Baron and Blue have shared a passion/or the law and each other for more than 20 years.
A list of their professional achievements could fill pages. Baron, a former ATLA president, founded his Dallas firm, Baron & Budd, in 1977shortly after winning his first asbestos case just a few years out of law school. That case began a long string of courtroom victories for Baron, who has since represented thousands of plaintiffs injured by asbestos, lead, pesticides, and other toxic substances.
As a doctor of psychology and a lawyer, Blue joined Baron's firm in 1986 and has since successfully represented hundreds of plaintiffs, many of whom suffered severe injuries from exposure to toxic substances. A nationally recognized expert on jury selection, she has written a book and gives frequent lectures on that subject.
How do Baron and Blue succeed in law and marriage? That's what we wanted to know. They agreed to speak with TRIAL Senior Editor Jean Hellwege about how they make their double partnership work.
