R.C. Cross was driving to breakfast the other day when he saw the brightly painted yellow sign, stuck to a pole in south Eugene.

"Love Your Wife!" it urged, complete with a heart symbol.

Given the predominance of campaign signs this time of year, Cross, 72, assumed the anonymous message to be someone's response to what he called "the nastiness of the political scene."
