The Sheldon volleyball team made it official Saturday afternoon. The Midwestern League champions are going to the state tournament.

In a revamped format that had even the league champions fighting for a berth in the OSAA Class 4A championships, the No. 6-ranked Irish relied on strong defense to grind out a 25-12, 25-17, 27-25 victory over Pendleton in the second round of the state playoffs.

It was fitting, perhaps, that a team that prides itself on its mental and physical toughness would need both of those attributes to earn its berth in the 16-team tournament that begins with Friday's pool play at the Chiles Center in Portland.

"I do think they elevated their game every game they played, but it was not one of our best matches," Sheldon coach Cathy Nelson said. "I don't think we played well, but I thought we played tough. We're a pretty tough group. This was the kind...
