...still with heavily populated editing suites, but it's staggering how much can be accomplished in post with a single PC or Mac, desktop or laptop.

By contrast, the impact of the video-ready PC or Mac on the production end of digital video has, arguably, been indirect at best. It's nice to know what you'll be able to do with your live video back in the editing bay with Final Cut or Premiere or Xpress DV, be it applying color correction or other cleaning effects or inserting your cutaways in a visual, multitrack timeline. It's not only nice to know what your NLE can do; it's imperative to shoot with it in mind. But the benefits are still indirect. Even if you're doing a quick-turn edit onsite (say, for a pre-construction legal proofing shoot), the PC or Mac still doesn't come into play until the editing stage.

DV Rack, a brand new software solution demo'd by Serious Magic at NAB 2004 and released in August, not only brings the laptop into play on a shoot, but it enables that laptop to replace a whole booth or van full of monitors and spectral analysis tools. As such, it's several tools in one: digital video recorder (using your specified PC hard drive), native DV monitor, event timer, frame grabber, waveform monitor and vectorscope, spectral signal analyzer (audio and video), and quality monitor. It's a remarkable product. And based on this first-look evaluation--with the disclaimer that it's virtually impossible not to be taken in by this program's razzle-dazzle, which in that way brings to mind the White City of the Columbian Exposition of 1893--it's hard to imagine a field shoot capable of accommodating a laptop that couldn't benefit from DV Rack's use,
