The Oct. 20 Register-Guard editorial "Counting civilian deaths" was patently intended to attempt to arouse people to be against the war and against President Bush. Would it not be appropriate for the editors to run another editorial citing the hundreds of thousands, or perhaps millions, of Iraqis killed by their former leader who was unseated by orders from President Bush?

Measure will help kids

At first I thought it was a misprint: "Measure 20-90 hurts kids" (letters, Oct. 23). The writer claims that kids will have a better chance of home ownership some day if the measure fails.

Measure 20-90 is a renewal, not a new tax. This money has provided $6 million per year for Eugene schools for the past four years, the equivalent of two teachers per school. Its passage will continue that money for another five years.

That writer has a poor understanding of what will hurt our kids. Our schools are running on bare bones in some cases. One parent told me her daughter's class has 31 kids who share 20 textbooks. The children that the writer claims to care so much about are facing worse if we don't pass this renewal. We should at least provide a textbook for each child.

I belong to the group Stand for Children. We care about all kids and work hard to give them tools to reach their full potential. We will be waving signs on street corners encouraging a yes vote on Measure 20-90. It was...
