Article Excerpt
High productivity, straightforward processing by means of 1-component crosslinking systems and substantial avoidance of organic solvents for better environmental friendliness--these are the key requirements that new adhesives and sealants have to satisfy today. Three developments from Bayer MaterialScience AG meet these criteria in completely different ways.

NANOSCALE SILICA SOLS FOR SOLVENT-BORNE POLYCHLOROPRENE DISPERSIONS

For ecological and workplace hygiene reasons, solvent-free adhesives based on water-borne polychloroprene (CR) dispersions are increasingly being developed. Their main areas of application include foam bonding, furniture lamination and bonding in shoe manufacture. Their adhesive properties are comparable with those of solvent borne adhesives. However, drying takes longer and strength only increases when drying is complete. Bayer MaterialScience therefore set itself the target of improving this property profile by means of processing-friendly 1-component compounding. The result of the work is the Dispercoll S product line, which is intended as a formulation component for Dispercoll C series CR dispersions. Dispercoll S is the name for four nanoparticle silica sols which differ in solids content and particle size.

A typical adhesive formulation contains about 30 parts by weight of Dispercoll S per 100 parts by weight of CR dispersion. A formulation of this type has high pseudoplasticity. The viscosity level can be set by the processor through the appropriate choice of Dispercoll S grade and content.

An outstanding property of the new CR/silica sol system is the rapid increase in strength immediately...
