Written by one of the most proficient anthropologists today, New Jersey Dreaming is an examplar of the possibilities and limitations of multi-sited ethnography. It also is a fine contribution to the ethnography of schools and of class and socio-economic mobility in America.
For the project, Ortner tracked down most of her 304 high-school classmates. She collected basic information from them through a mailed questionnaire. She then travelled around the United States to record "loose life histories," that is, their recollections of their early years and high school and of their lives since. With this data, Ortner first looks at the factors that "made" the class of '58....
