It has been a good year for Baldwin, with turnover and profits up. But 12 months ago it might have been very different. The company was struggling under reorganisation and looking vulnerable. When in December Technotrans came calling with a takeover offer of $2.50 a share, it looked all over.

But the shareholders who had backed the reorganisation decided otherwise and were holding out for $3 a share to recoup at least some of their investment. However, Technotrans blinked and broke off talks at the end of January. Baldwin would sink or swim on its own. It has put its strokes together, and while no Olympic champion is at no risk of drowning.
