East Greenwich Photo & Studio (www.egphoto.com) is a specialty photo and camera store that also offers professional photography services.

"We do a lot of onsite photography for weddings, bar mitzvahs, confirmations, and other various events," says Max Dittelman, vice president and son of owner and head photographer Soozie Sundlun. "We also do commercial and product photography."

To accommodate their growing professional photography business, East Greenwich Photo, also known as EG Photo, added a third floor in the early 1990s to house a new studio and portrait gallery.

Now, the gallery serves as a showroom for EG Photo professional photography. Initially, however, the studio also exhibited and sold the works of other artists.

"It wasn't working well, and people didn't sell much," Dittelman says. "We had receptions; and people just came and stained our carpet with wine and cheese, but they never bought anything. We weren't making commissions, and someone would have to stay late to lock up after them. It was much more trouble than it was worth. About a year ago, Soozie decided, enough with this."

EG Photo has found several better uses for the space.

"In addition to the studio and gallery, we have a reception desk and a presentation room up there. We can sit down and talk to you about your wedding or event," Dittelman states. "After the event, we can go through your proofs and build an album there, too. We use it on the front end and the back end with customers."

Dittelman says the gallery has increased portrait and wedding sales.

"It allows us to showcase what we can do," he adds. "When a bride comes in, she sees 12 to 15 large, framed wedding pictures. She can walk around the room to see what she might be able to get from her wedding photography....
