Article Excerpt My first computer "hard disk" was a five Megabyte add-on to an Apple ][ Plus computer. The "Sider"drive - it sat on the side of the computer and was pronounced "cider" - was a huge assist to my law practice. Letters, briefs, corporate minutes, deeds and the like could now be "permanently" saved and easily retrieved, instead of saving up to 100 Kilobytes, and eventually 140 Kilobytes of data on a 5-1/4 inch floppy disk, then having to browse through a rapidly growing disk library to get to the needed files. The Sider changed all that. Of course, with only five Megabytes of space, it was difficult to really lose files that you needed.
Today, the proverbial $500 desktop computer comes with at least an 80 Gigabyte drive - roughly 16,000 times the capacity of that original Sider - and it becomes difficult to find the file, or the contact name, or the e-mail message that you know is there.
The solution is to index every word in every file so that you know exactly where every word...
