Article Excerpt When I receive a copy of a program review I add it to my task list and try to schedule it with a definite date to determine whether the program meets my review criteria and a tentative date for publication. Occasionally, through inadvertence, the program doesn't even make it to the task list.
Such it was with WizDoc. Even though the developer's Web site and PR material used such very hot buzz words such as "data mining", "knowledge management" and "concept based searching", the first version I received simply got lost. When a new release of the program appeared, a little investigation led to the conclusion that this might be a program lawyers could really use. If it worked.
In simple terms, WizDoc for Office lets the user select folders containing files created by Microsoft Office applications, PDF files, Web pages or plain text pages, (and Contacts, E-mail, Calendar items, task lists and so forth created by Outlook.) The program then indexes the files in the designated folders, and lets the user retrieve them by a somewhat simple standard search, or something that the developer calls a Concept Search. Thus the user will be able to manage the expertise inherent in existing computer files by mining the nuggets of brilliance in the firm's data storehouses. Or so the theory goes....
