I send a lot of documents attached to e-mail. Some, using the native format word processor or spreadsheet program; more using Adobe PDF (Portable Document Format) easily readable with the freely available Adobe Reader.The traditional way of converting a word processor or spreadsheet file to PDF was to use Adobe Acrobat. In additional to simple PDF document creation, Acrobat had a number of other features, including but not limited to document encryption and the ability to sign a document with a digital signature, guaranteeing both security and authenticity. As PDF grew increasingly popular, and Acrobat more expeneive, some application programs - WordPerfect, for example - included the ability to convert a file directly, and PDF Drivers that allowed the user to "print" a PDF file from the creating Microsoft Windows application, became available.
