Last week I wrote about the first version of Bloomba and the latest version of the Opera Web Browser, a program that includes an e-mail application that indexes e-mail for easy retrieval. This week, I'll continue with Gmail, the beta release of Google's much discussed Web-based e-mail application. Lawyers may be reluctant to use it, but the program does work very well.

I only recently acquired an "invite" to obtain a G-mail account, although anybody who is anyone has been able to get one, as Google has made them more available in the last few weeks. (I mentioned the new e-mail address to my 20-something daughter who dug out an "invite" from one of her friends and immediately responded from her own shiny new G-mail account.) G-mail is sort of like Hotmail, but because it is a product of Google and because Google has been rolling the accounts out in relatively small quantities, seems to have considerably more cachet.

A Gmail account is free, and instead of a measly 10 or 20 Megabytes of online storage, you can store up to 1000 Megabytes of messages and attachments. You can send and receive G-mail, but it is Web based: you can't download G-mail to Outlook or Bloomba or whatever else you are using....
