Article Excerpt The big news last week was that LexisNexis has acquired DATA.TXT's TimeMatters, the do everything practice management software. LexisNexis has been marketing TimeMatters for several years, and LexisNexis has been buying compatible businesses in the last couple of years, so the announcement was not a shock. But this does make it a good time to take a look at the most recent iteration of the program, TimeMatters 5.
[Installing TimeMatters]
TimeMatters comes in three flavors: the small firm "Professional" version, the larger firm (or larger database) "Enterprise" SQL database for a client-server network, and a thin-client "World Server" edition that lets any user on a LAN access the database from a Web browser. The Professional version costs $300 for the first user, and $150 for each additional user; double that for the Enterprise addition. Double once again if you purchase BillingMatters, separately, but take an across-the-board 15 per cent discount if you buy the two programs together. The World Server edition costs $300 per seat, plus a server fee of between $1500 and $19,500.
I installed TimeMatters and BillingMatters Professional on a standalone computer from a single CD, a minimalist way to test the program. A second CD includes extensive Webcam training files. Although it will take at least hours, time spent reviewing these files, and playing with the sample data...
