I can usually determine whether a word processing program properly formats my writing, or checks spelling or saves an image of a document before it crashes (or crashes excessively or not), and it isn't difficult to determine whether an electronic spreadsheet calculates expected output from specific input.

Sometimes, though, it isn't quite simple as that. How can I tell easily whether an anti-virus program has really found and disabled files on my computer, as claimed? Or whether spyware software has really removed "call home" software that reports to some third party busy body on how you use your computer. And yet, even I can't measure it, doesn't mean that "it", whatever it is, shouldn't be the subject of a column.
