Supporters of ousted Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide claim to have imported tactics from insurgents in Iraq as they took to the streets early in October demanding the return of their elected leader. "We'll be in the streets until death or until Aristide comes back. We won't stop. If they come in here, we're going to cut off their heads. It's going to be just like Baghdad," said partisan Milo Fenelon.

Fenelon and his fellow protestors were building roadblocks out of rocks and the burned hulks of cars to keep police out of their stronghold, the Port-au-Prince slum of Bel Air. Playing into the Iraq analogy, interim Prime Minister Gerard Latortue said of the opposition offensive, now called Operation Baghdad, that it had brought back "a climate of terror," resembling the months leading up to Aristide's February departure (see NotiCen, 2004-03-04).
