WHEELSET bearings are subjected to extreme loads and are therefore among the most important safety-critical components in a rail vehicle. They are expected to operate safely and trouble free for millions of kilometres during their entire life.

At the same time, the demands regarding speed and maintenance intervals have increased enormously in the past decades since the conversion to diesel and electric traction. In 1957, axlebox bearings were serviced after an average of 130,000km. Today, FAG wheelset bearings in ICE high-speed trains, for example, are maintained at intervals of up to 1.5 million km.
