Among the most encouraging recent trends in literary studies is the growth of interest in the literature of travel. In a world that has become decidedly small and familiar, scholars have developed a thirst for the excitements to be found in the inky pages of travelers for whom the world was still limitless and strange. The literature of travel, or odeporica, as it is known in Italian, is as old as the written word. And the journey--as a genre, theme, or motif, or as a central metaphor or structuring device--is nearly everywhere in imaginative literature, ancient or modern. This new scholarly emphasis, therefore, has obligated scholars to arrive, if it is at all possible, at a clear idea of exactly what constitutes odeporica and to seek out the most fruitful ways of studying it.
