Twenty years ago, Katherine Hamilton-Smith was hired by the Lake County Discovery Museum near Wauconda to create the first-ever postcard archives.

Today, the 46-year-old Libertyville resident continues as curator of the internationally acclaimed Curt Teich Postcard Archives, which boasts the world's largest public collection with about 2.5 million picture postcards. This Sunday, the museum will celebrate its 20th anniversary at 4 p.m.

The collection was huge right from the beginning.

"Actually, it arrived over the course of five days and every day a full-size moving van would pull up in front of the archives building," Hamilton-Smith said.

Those five moving vans were more like semi-tractor trailers.

"It filled every nook and cranny of the building ... upstairs, downstairs, basements, closets," Hamilton-Smith said.

The core of today's collection was donated at the onset by the Curt Teich Co., hence the archives was named after it.
