How far we've come. Or is it how far we've fallen?

TV Land looks at the topic of "Taboo TV" in a new hourlong documentary debuting at 8 p.m. Sunday. Even though "TV history" might be little more than 50 years old, the idea of covering changing standards of what's been considered appropriate on TV over the last half-century is not just intriguing but complex. It can't be done in an hour.

Yet, for all its flaws and oversights, the "Inside TV Land" episode is engaging and even eye-opening. It's stronger in the beginning, with the ridiculous early restrictions of the '50s, than it is toward the end, where the issues of sex and violence are more complicated in the present day. Even so, it does make undeniable points about social mores.
