So, why is it that in some offices people seem harried and overwhelmed, rarely smiling? And in others there is a sense that this is a place where people enjoy their jobs?

Of course, people like receiving good pay and benefits. But morale can be enhanced a great deal by a number of other things including employee recognition programs, incentives, flexible work times, family-friendly policies and an attitude that promotes teamwork rather than a top-down command structure.
