Article Excerpt Last year was a mixed bag for Mississippi's nonprofit community.
A number of sectors saw renewed growth in donations and funding, while others saw support recede even as demand for services grew throughout the year. This year is expected to bring more of the same as nonprofit organizations continue to tighten their belts and plan conservatively into 2004.
Mark McCrary, director of the Mississippi Center for Nonprofits, said that organizations in all sectors, from healthcare advocacy groups to mutual-membership nonprofits, were seeing some cutbacks, but not as severe as those among organizations in other states.
"We haven't faced, in Mississippi, where organizations are drastically cutting their budgets," he said.
Most of the cuts in funding tended to come in the form of reductions in governmental subsidies, both on the local and state levels, according to McCrary.
Tim Hedgepeth, executive director for the Mississippi Arts Commission, echoed McCrary's comments.
