I WISH PRESIDENT BUSH REALLY WAS the "conservative extremist" Patti Burka and others make him out to be ["The Man Who Isn't There," February 2004]. A genuinely principled conservative extremist would surely not have expanded Federal control over education as Bush has, nor would he have expanded Medicare with the drug benefit and increased overall spending more than Bill Clinton ever did. Yes, President Bush had good working relationships with Texas Democratic party leaders like Bob Bullock and Pete Laney. And what of it? The Texas Legislature has never been a genuine hotbed of ideology-driven big spenders, so the much-ballyhooed "bi-partisanship" Bush was lauded for is actually traditional Texas monopartisanship.
