CHARLOTTETOWN September 1864

Delegates from all over the Maritime colonies have gathered here to discuss forming a political union. The idea of such a union isn't new. Nova Scotians like it because, as the biggest colony, they would dominate it. The Nova Scotians also see union as a way of restoring the colony's original 18th-century boundaries, which included Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. New Brunswickers are only lukewarm.

The Maritime Union Conference is being held in Charlottetown because that's the only way to make sure that politicians from Prince Edward Island show up. However, local politicians have been joined by others from Canada who invited themselves to the conference. Discussion has thus...
