...the second with the interpretation cultural materials largely drawn from the Yafar, a small hunting-cultivating society in the West Sepik. Bernard Juillerat is without a doubt the premier representative of psychoanalytic anthropology in France today. He is Director of Research at the CNRS and a member of the Laboratory for Social Anthropology at the College de France in Paris. Together with Maurice Godelier and of course the grand old man, Levi-Strauss, these represent the dominant theoretical positions in French anthropology over the past three decades: psychoanalysis, Marxism and structuralism. While Anglophone anthropology had some dalliance with these positions in earlier decades, more recently a strangely eclectic project has emerged, as much concerned with the principles of its own articulation as with the cultural forms of Others. Empiricism and objectivism, let alone unconscious structures or principles, have been cast aside in favour of some version of 'the meaning of life'.

Juillerat himself, although devoted to the project of a psychoanalytic anthropology, is nonetheless not as far from recent developments in the Anglophone discipline as one might suppose. The present book, a collection of previously published papers and extracts, articulates the elements of a fully developed project which utilizes a Freudian inspiration while respecting indigenous ontology and its symbolisms....
