Lost in the white noise of CART's never-ending troubles: Cristiano da Matta's dominant performance this season. Thirteen races in, he leads the season points chase by a full 55 points over Dario Franchitti, 161 to 106. He also leads the field in laps led (526, with Paul Tracy at 291), times led (22), as well as in laps (1632) and miles (2876) completed.

Week in and week out, da Matta is the one constant threat. Already he has six wins in 2002, and but for a few subtle errors-a flawed pit stop strategy this past weekend at Montreal for example-he would surely have won several more, challenging the eight-win season record shared by CART legends Michael Andretti and Al Unser Jr. With six races left, it would be unwise indeed to bet against da Matta at least matching that record before the year is out. Certainly, if not for all the off-the-track shenanigans in the series persistently stealing the spotlight, da Matta's dominating record on the track would be CART's story of the year.

So just how good is da Matta? Is his a truly superior talent, as some say, and one soon to be demonstrated in Formula One? Or, as some others say, is he simply a good driver...
