Article Excerpt DESPITE ALL THE TURBULENT NEWS, there is still so much to be proud of--and that pride is demonstrated by what has been done in the housing marketplace. It remains the bright spot in our struggling economy. While the stock market has declined, the value of the investment in homes has risen. And, more than ever, we appreciate what we have and are not afraid to reflect on our blessings. But, having said this, is the current 68 percent homeownership rate good enough? Not really--especially when you consider that the rate for minorities is substantially less than that.
In his June 17, 2002, remarks, President Bush called on all of us to be the dream-makers, helping to expand the opportunities for homeownership. Bush said, "I believe there is such a thing as the American dream. And I believe those of us who have been given positions of responsibility must do everything we can to spotlight the dream and make sure the dream shines in all neighborhoods all throughout our country." Homeownership creates healthy neighborhoods, increases family stability, stimulates local business growth...
