During the past year, the San Diego City Council has audited spending by the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau, pared its transient occupancy tax subsidy by 21.5 percent, and transferred its job of marketing to lure citywide conventions to the San Diego Convention Center Corp. Now, the structure of the board itself is in question.

Joe Terzi, regional vice president for Starwood Hotels and immediate past chairman of the bureau, shared with the San Diego Business Journal his views on the issues ConVis faced then and still faces.

Question: Have the recent events involving ConVis affected its status and reputation?

Answer: My hotel counterparts in Seattle and Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Hawaii told me that some competing bureaus and centers were talking about using the significant reduction in funding and changes in the citywide organization as selling points against us.

But through a coordinated effort, the center and the bureau reassured our customers that they would continue to receive the service that bad made San Diego their chosen destination.
