Mentoring agency to give volunteers choices: time crunch makes flexibility important.

For nearly two years, officials at central Indiana's Big Brothers and Big Sisters agencies concentrated on one thing: effectively merging the organizations after almost 30 years as separate entities.

Children still were matched with adult mentors--either through the traditional one-on-one program or site-based group activities--but neither agency made a concerted effort to recruit new volunteers.

Now, with the merger complete, a hiring freeze lifted and the combined agency settled into its new home on North Meridian Street, the focus has shifted.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana is preparing to launch a major volunteer recruitment initiative, and it has designed several pilot programs to help attract busy adults to the mentoring ranks.

The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of children waiting for services, said CEO Sally Davis.
